Z piosenką Are You Lonesome Tonight ?  wiąże się anegdota. Menadżer Elvis Tom Parker przez długi czas namawiał swojego podopiecznego do nagrania tej piosenki, która była uwielbiana przez jego żonę. Był to jedyny przypadek w całej karierze artysty, kiedy Parker wtrącił się, i to z takim rezultatem w repertuar Elvisa. Przy realizacji Elvis wzorował się na wykonaniu zespołu Blue Barron Orchestra. Część monologu który został zaczerpnięty z Szekspirowskiego "Jak Wam się podoba" /"As You Like It"/ która w oryginale brzmi "All the world`s a stage, And all the man and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances". Piosenka została nagrana 4 kwietnia 1960 roku w RCA Studio B Nashville.na raty. Najpierw zarejstrowano pięć podejść poczym zrealizowano dwa tak zwane "Work Part-Ending". Wersja master to /spliced/ mix podejścia piątego i pierwszego work part-ending. Singiel z Are You Lonesome Tonight ? i I Gotta Know na drugiej stronie ukazał sie w listopadzie a na listach Billboardu znalazła się na miejscu pierwszym przez sześć tygodni roku 1960.
